NYCMotorcyclist.com gets a 2020 facelift — Rahoul Ghose

NYCMotorcyclist.com now boasts a more online news-magazine feel, with a homepage featuring specific sections guiding you to the latest news, regular features and columns, special sections ... such as our new Featured Video element, and essential links and info, like the Current Riding Weather Conditions.

To put it mildly, Covid-19 put a huge and unavoidable spanner in people's lives this year — loss of life, loss of work & financial stress, illness, forced social isolation, racial tensions — and the list continues. While these times have definitely seen a level of strife not encountered in decades, NYC, and in many cases members of our own moto community, have risen to the challenge, demonstrating an abundance of compassion, ingenuity and selflessness which is inspirational in so many ways. You may have read about some of these people in our ongoing NYC Hometown Heroes series.

Personally, slotted into the coronavirus 'high risk' category as an asthmatic, suffering the loss of a family member, and falling ill twice over the last three months ... forced isolation became the 'norm', and could have meant retreating from everything for me. But looking to those social leaders in our city, and what they have accomplished, inspired me to take on the long-overdue, desk-bound task of completely redoing NYCMotorcyclist.com from the ground up: Two-hundred and forty pages of features, galleries, calendar events and resources.

In all honesty, the design — a hold over from the LAMotorcyclist.com days — was getting dated: functionality was impaired with six-year-old coding, and the structure of the site did not do justice to the expanse of content we have produced over the past four years here in NYC.

In the simplest terms possible ... it was hard to find stuff.

NYCMotorcyclist.com gets a 2020 face lift ... regular feature sections, revised links format — Rahoul Ghose

Not to be outdone, the Calendar of Events section now features a modular format with linked events, as well as highlight events with more detailed information below. The Events Submission form has been redone to make it easier for organizers to get us their info ... dates, links, text and any graphics.

Past content — features and event coverage — are now organized chronologically by year, and galleries have now also been divided into Spotlight features, Events and Lifestyle categories. All our features now have a rotating section of Other Features you might like to read. And all galleries now use the full width of the page. As before, the site is fully responsive, adapting its look to PC, tablet and smart phone formats. One note, for gallery index pages on a smart phone, graphics fall into a single column, but each can be scrolled sideways to reveal more gallery options.

In terms of sections, we now have hub pages for Motos and Photos: NYC, NYC Hometown Heroes and Sorez the Scribe, our resident moto poet. Forms on the site now have an added level of security, including the multitude of Comment, Contact Us and Submission forms.

Not to be outdone, the Calendar of Events section now features a modular format with linked events, as well as highlight events with more detailed information below. The Events Submission form has been redone to make it easier for organizers to get us their info ... dates, links, text and any graphics. And the Club Directory and Links/Resources section return with an updated look.

As always, we are constantly looking for new clubs and links to add. You can use the Contact Us form, or drop us an email at rahoul@nycmotorcyclist.com with suggestions. Finally, the menu system has been revised to include easier direct one-click access to areas with drop-down links ... and as part of the menu bar, EVERY page has a search bar to look for specific subjects, pages, etc.

What it's all about ... a ride to Clutch Moto cafe in New Jersey, Saturday morning, with friends. — Rahoul Ghose

Ultimately, this all comes down to trying to always represent the diverse family that is the NYC motorcycling community ... and celebrating the two-wheeled enthusiasm that unites us all at some primal level.

Ultimately, this all comes down to trying to always represent the diverse family that is the NYC motorcycling community ... and celebrating the two-wheeled enthusiasm that unites us all at some base level. That was never more apparent than this past weekend, when I had the pleasure of joining a local ride out to Clutch Moto cafe in New Jersey, organized by @johnvincent.hilario.

It literally was the first time I'd had the bike out this year ... before Covid-19, the bike wouldn't start. With a new ignition coil installed, I finally got to fire it up again. And seeing old friends again and meeting new ones, albeit with masks on, definitely boosted a spirit that has taken a beating so far this year. We look forward to covering more events in 2020, meeting new people and writing about the inspiring riders that make up our tight knit community.

Our newest features include: SLOW AF: SOCAL SUPERMOTO AS THE ULTIMATE SELF-HELP ... a personal account of Covid and motorcycling as therapy by Cassandra Ficacci; and NIGHT RIDE, our featured video and a gallery, detailing a recent johnnypuetz Productions night-time shoot with a Ducati Multistrada 1200.

In the works are reviews of QuadLock's new wireless charging head (mount not included) for motorcycles, and the Vigo Smart Tracker, a new generation motorcycle tracker with advanced theft and accident alerts; a feature on the new format for the Distinguished Gentleman's Ride ... we're going solo; and several new featured galleries. So stay tuned. And keep those positive comments coming. You can read what some of our viewers are saying on the About Us page.
